Additional Boat Contest Information:   The Race  |  The Judging

A boat building contest was a part of the Children's July 4 Fair on Frye Island. Several families have already signed up. Final registration is June 7, 2003. Send your intention to enter to Mary Deming, 1676 Ridge Road, Frye Island or to 9 Sunrise Road, Danbury, Ct. 06810.

Here are the details:

  • Open to residents of Frye Island and their extended families

  • At least one of the boat builders must be a child 16 years of age or under

  • Every team is a winner

  • Hancock Lumber and Red Mill are among the lumber companies who will provide the materials. Each team will receive the same materials:
         2 sheets of 1/4 inch lauan plywood, 4' x 8'
         4 8 foot long 2 x 4's
         1 pound 3 penny galvanized nails
         4 tubes construction adhesive

  • Only these materials can be used to build the boat. Your own paint may be added

Teams may pick up their supplies on the Island on Saturday, June 28. The finished boats will be judged six days later on the morning of July 4 and will be in a boat parade during Fair hours. Each boat will be operated by two of the team. Judges will make awards for such things as best construction, seaworthiness, originality, attractiveness, etc.

Teams entering will want to be prepared when they come to the Island with their plans and their hammers, saws, and glue guns.

The committee organizing this event is made up of these individuals: Ruth Ann Bourque, Mary Deming, Lee Dolloff, and Al Schmidt.
