TO: The Registered Voters of the Town of Frye Island
On Tuesday, June 12, the Town had its annual SAD 6 Budget vote.
Of some 75 registered voters, only sixteen voted, including two absentee voters. Only one Town official voted, out of four eligible to vote, and two members of the FII Board of Directors voted, out of four eligible to vote.
There were six appropriation articles on the warrant. None of them received a majority vote from Frye Island voters. The only warrant article that did receive a majority was the authority to spend State aid and other grant money, and there were even several votes against that!
I do not think this gives the Legislature and the voters of Maine the kind of message we want to give them. It tells them that the Frye Island does not care to spend money for education. This is what they have been saying all along. And now they have more proof.
I suspect that many voters did not vote because they did not believe their vote would count. As we learned in Florida last fall, every vote counts. And those that were not cast counted even more.
This kind of message to the Legislature will not help us to withdraw from SAD 6.
