Photos of Celebration: Slide Show

Banners at P.O. BUildingWelcome to Frye Island’s Tenth Anniversary as the newest town in Maine.  Friday, July fourth, we kicked off our three day celebration with a boat parade led by Captain Paul Bourque and his first and only mate, Ruth, in their tow boat.  More than 30 decorated boats of every description set sail from Long Beach.  The orange Raymond Rescue Boat couldn’t resist joining our fun.

That afternoon, Ed Charrette, Chairman of the Conservation Commission, led a fascinating trail tour of one of the many trails that intersect the island.

Ice Cream SocialThe Golf Course’s traditional Fourth of July Ice Cream Social was so well-attended, they had to send out for more ice cream.  The large crowd also enjoyed a silent auction run by Emy Adams and Rainy Andronoco and a book sale sponsored by the island Book Group.  The proceeds from these last two events went to cover expenses for our weekend gala.

Kids leading ParadeParades on Frye Island are unique because the majority of people are in them rather than watching them.  Nancy and Phil Perry organized our Saturday parade to include all our rescue and fire equipment, two lucky children who won seats on the fire truck in an island raffle, the parade marshal, Rep. John Robinson, over 100 decorated golf carts, Garden Club members, the Bonny Eagle High School Band Bonny Eagle Band(thanks to the supreme effort of Kathy Potts) bicyclists and walkers.  It meandered from the Community Center to the ferry landing where Town Manager, Wayne Fournier, welcomed everyone.  The invocation was given by the Rev. Ted Eckholm;  State Representative John Robinson spoke briefly and read a letter of congratulations from Senator Susan Collins.

The Fire Department welcomed us to their July Fourth holiday Hot Dog Lunch at the Fire Barn.  Many island families shared the food and friendship at this always popular event.

Saturday afternoon’s Scavenger Hunt featured 15 teams of children and adults scouring the island for sites that were cleverly coded by Nicole and Amy Wagner with prizes and help from Linda and Mike Tabris and Lenore and David Rosenthal.

Saturday evening’s fireworks dazzled hundreds and hundreds of boaters, too numerous to count.

Tug of War EventThe Family Field Day events, organized by Pam LaCerte, on Sunday afternoon were attended by several hundred adults and children.  It took the cooperation of many volunteer helpers to lead the different age groupings in so many fun filled contests.

Road RaceThe annual road race on Sunday morning, led by Ted Charrette, his family and neighbors featured a new event, the Dennis Stafford Memorial Marathon.  Cathy Stafford was there to help start the race and greet the winners.

Beach PartyOur weekend of festivities ended on a high note with a Progressive Beach Party, chaired by Nancy Donio, ably assisted by Nancy and Tom Bishop and Mary and Chef Tim McCarthy.  Folks enjoyed hors d’oeuvres at Beach Four, Chef Tim’s cooking at Beach Five and made S’Mores at Beach Six as the sun set on a fabulous tenth birthday party for a special island town.  Frye Islanders know how to celebrate!
