Frye Island ...
A Community Managed by its Owners Winter Trip to Frye Island
This year’s winter trip to the Island will be the weekend of February 22-24. This is a semi-organized, annual trip with many islanders making the trek that particular weekend because they know that others will be there. The preferred mode of travel would be snowmobile but many have cross-country skied or hiked on foot in the past. Proper planning is essential. The roads are not plowed and the snow can be very deep, especially if you are on foot. Warm clothing in layers is a must, as well as water and food of some sort. As usual, the trip coincides with the Annual Rotary Club Fishing Derby on Sebago Lake. Most of the activities involved with the Derby are being held at Point Sebago Resort again this year. You can view those details at www.icefishingderby.com There is skim coating of ice on the lake as of this morning, (1/04) but the long range is for a significant period of warmer than normal weather, starting this weekend. More seasonably cold weather is forecast for the end of January so we'll have to wait and see when, and if, we get safe, solid ice formation. There will be a follow-up posting with another message as we get closer to that weekend. I tend to make numerous trips by snowmobile once we get safe ice and I will make a pre-trip up to the area prior to that weekend and report back via email or the Town Website on my findings so no one makes an unnecessary journey. If you would like to be placed on the email distribution list for the trip, drop me an email at fryeislandguy@verizon.net. Dave Bond *Disclaimer: The Town of Frye Island does not sanction this trip and no services of any kind are available on the Island. It is up to the individual to properly plan for their own safety. |
